As the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) gets ready to present its 2026–27 financial budget later this month, details obtained through a Right to Information (RTI) application provide insight into the scale of its infrastructure spending during the current year. The RTI reply, sought by The Times of India, highlights how the country’s wealthiest civic body has prioritised capital-intensive projects. For 2025–26, the BMC had set aside ₹43,162 crore for capital expenditure out of a total budget of ₹74,427.41 crore, underlining a strong focus on long-term infrastructure creation, reported TOI.
According to the RTI data, the civic administration has already spent ₹19,443 crore on capital works so far in the ongoing financial year, with infrastructure-focused departments accounting for the majority of the expenditure, reported TOI. The Roads and Traffic Department recorded the highest spending, amounting to ₹3,365 crore, while the Mumbai Sewage Disposal Department incurred expenses of ₹3,767 crore. Bridge-related projects followed closely with an outlay of ₹2,940 crore, reported TOI. These departments are central to several large-scale projects currently reshaping the city’s transport and utility networks, officials said, as cited by TOI.

Major road and bridge projects have progressed significantly over the past year, reflecting the BMC’s infrastructure push. The citywide road concretisation drive, aimed at converting all asphalt roads into concrete, is underway across multiple locations. Several crucial bridges have neared completion, with the Carnac Bridge, now renamed the Indore Bridge, already opened last year. The Bellasis Bridge and Goregaon Flyover were completed during the current year and are expected to open shortly, while work on the Sion Bridge is likely to conclude before the monsoon, reported TOI.
Sewerage infrastructure has also received significant attention, with the Mumbai Sewage Disposal Department working at full capacity to build seven sewage treatment plants across the city, reported TOI. Civic officials noted that since a large portion of contractor payments is usually cleared towards the financial year-end, total capital expenditure for 2025–26 could exceed ₹27,955 crore—the amount spent in 2024–25—marking another record year, reported by TOI. However, rising liabilities crossing ₹2 lakh crore have prompted discussions on alternative funding options such as Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InvITs), officials said, as reported by TOI.
