Mumbai has exposed an illegal racket involving the sale of counterfeit products under the name of renowned brand Bombay Dyeing. The Goregaon Police conducted a raid in the Motilal Nagar area of Goregaon West and seized 70 fake bedsheets worth ₹2,44,930. In connection with the case, a 31-year-old man identified as Shahnawaz Sarfaraz Ali has been arrested. The accused was openly selling counterfeit bedsheets resembling genuine Bombay Dyeing products in both wholesale and retail markets without issuing bills.

According to the police, Ajaz Hanif Qazi, a sales manager at Bombay Dyeing and an authorised representative responsible for protecting the company’s proprietary rights, received information on January 21, 2026, about the sale of fake bedsheets in the Goregaon area. After verifying the information, he lodged a written complaint at the Goregaon Police Station with prior permission from the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 11.

Following the complaint, the police team carried out a raid at a premises near the Big Mosque in Sethia Sea View Building. During the operation, counterfeit bedsheets packed under the Bombay Dyeing brand name were recovered from a temporary stall. Upon inspection, it was found that the fabric used was light and of inferior quality. While the packaging, colour combination and design closely resembled original products, noticeable differences in printing, font and finishing confirmed that the items were counterfeit.

The police seized a total of 70 bedsheets, each with a declared market price of ₹3,499. When questioned about the source of the goods and asked to produce purchase bills, the accused failed to submit any valid documents.

A case has been registered against the accused on a complaint filed by Bombay Dyeing for brand infringement, forgery and illegal sale of counterfeit goods. The police are now investigating the supply chain of the fake products and probing the involvement of other individuals in the racket.
