Mumbai Fire: Level I Blaze Breaks Out Near Hancock Bridge in Mazgaon

A fire broke out in a group of hutments in Mumbai’s Mazgaon area on Tuesday morning, prompting an immediate response from emergency services. Officials said the incident was reported around 11 am in the Ekta Nagar locality near Hancock Bridge. According to preliminary information, the blaze was confined to nearly seven to eight hutments built as ground-plus-partly one and two-storey structures. Fire brigade personnel quickly reached the spot and managed to stop the flames from spreading to nearby houses. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident, while officials continued to monitor the area and assess the overall impact of the fire.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade classified the incident as a Level I fire at approximately 11:03 am, indicating that it was a minor blaze but required urgent firefighting operations. Several agencies joined the rescue and containment efforts, including teams from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police, BEST authorities, ambulance services and ward officials. Firefighters worked for nearly two hours to fully control the situation. Officials stated that the flames were finally extinguished around 1 pm. Initial investigations suggested that the rapid response by emergency teams played a major role in preventing the fire from causing larger destruction in the densely populated locality.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident earlier this week, a major fire broke out at multiple scrap godowns in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area, leaving one person injured. Civic officials had said the blaze started around 5 am on Friday at Kurla Scrap Dealers located in Ekta Nagar, Mandala, near the Govandi-Mankhurd Link Road. A 25-year-old man identified as Shahrukh Khan suffered nearly 40 to 45 per cent burn injuries in the incident. He was rushed to the civic-run Sion Hospital for treatment, where doctors later confirmed that his condition was stable and that he continued to receive medical care under observation.

After receiving information about the fire in Mankhurd, authorities immediately deployed four fire engines along with additional firefighting vehicles to the site. Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and local police teams also arrived to supervise rescue and safety operations. According to civic authorities, the blaze was brought under control and completely extinguished by around 8.40 am. The fire caused extensive damage to electric wiring, LPG cylinders, tarpaulin sheets, plywood, oil drums, steel sheets and large quantities of scrap material stored inside the affected units, commonly referred to as ‘galas’, officials said.
