Four youths were arrested by the Samtanagar Police after they allegedly argued with and pushed a police constable who stopped them for riding quadruple-seat on a single motorcycle in Kandivali.

The incident came to light after a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for obstructing a public servant from discharging official duties. The arrested accused have been identified as Prem Navnath Waghmare, Sagar Gaurav Magar, Akshay Ramesh Gaikwad and Anand Vinod Jogdand. All four were produced before a local court following their arrest.

According to police, constable Govind Arjun Sangale, a resident of Borivali and currently posted at Samtanagar Police Station, was on night patrol duty on February 18. He reported for his shift at 8 pm and was patrolling the area on his official motorcycle late at night.

While on patrol near Station Road in Kandivali, outside Adarsh Juice Centre, he spotted four persons riding on a single motorcycle. He stopped the rider and asked for his driving licence. Informing them that action would be taken for violating traffic rules, he directed them to accompany him to the police station.

At this point, the three pillion riders allegedly began arguing with the constable. They reportedly used abusive language, pushed him and attempted to obstruct him from performing his official duties. The youths allegedly threatened him, saying, “Let’s see how you take us to the police station.”

Despite being informed that penal action would be initiated and asked to cooperate, the four created a ruckus at the spot and began recording videos on their mobile phones. They allegedly insisted that any fine be imposed on the spot and refused to go to the police station. When told that a receipt was not available and they would have to visit the police station for further action, they again refused, abused the constable and pushed him. They also switched off their motorcycle during the altercation.

As the situation turned tense, constable Sangale called the Samtanagar mobile police van and informed them about the incident. A police team soon reached the spot and took the four youths into custody.

Based on Sangale’s complaint, a case was registered against the accused for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of his duties. Following the registration of the offence, all four accused were formally arrested by the Samtanagar Police. Further investigation is underway.
