A tragic incident occurred on Saturday night in Mumbai's Wadala area, where an 18-month-old boy lost his life and his mother suffered serious injuries after a car ran over them while they were sleeping on a footpath. The accident took place late on Balaram Khedekar Road, as reported by the RAK Marg police station.

Authorities stated that Priya Nikhil Londhe, 29, and her son Vardaan were asleep when a speeding car, driven by 46-year-old Kamal Vijay Riya, struck them. The toddler died at the scene, while Priya sustained severe injuries. Riya has been arrested and charged with causing death by negligence under Indian law. Preliminary investigations indicate that Riya was not intoxicated at the time of the accident.

Priya lived with her husband, Nikhil Londhe, and their two children—Swarap (5 years) and Wardhan (18 months). They were part of a roadside settlement that had existed for 30 years but was recently removed by the BMC under a relocation scheme. While most families were provided rooms, some, like Priya’s, were still waiting due to incomplete paperwork. The family had temporarily rented a place, but some of their belongings remained on the footpath.

On the night of the incident, Nikhil had gone to Dadar Station to bring food for his family. Meanwhile, Priya and Wardhan were sleeping on the footpath when the speeding car hit them. Locals immediately informed the police and emergency services. RAK Marg Police arrived at the scene and arrested the driver, Kamal Vijay Riya (46), a resident of Wadala Bhawya Heights. The injured mother and child were rushed to KEM Hospital, where doctors confirmed the baby’s death. Priya suffered fractures in her shoulder and back and is currently undergoing treatment. RAK Marg Police have registered FIR No. 0038/25 under IPC sections 106, 125(b), and 281, and further investigation is underway.
