A leading insurance company has received an extortion email demanding ₹3 crore in Bitcoin. The sender has threatened to leak the company’s confidential data if the ransom is not paid. In this connection, the N.M. Joshi Marg Police have registered an extortion case and initiated an investigation with the help of cyber experts.

According to reports, the company, located at Peninsula Park in Lower Parel, received the email a week ago. The sender demanded 4.2 Bitcoin (approximately ₹3 crore) and warned that the company’s data would be made public if the ransom was not paid. Alarmed by the threat, the company lodged a complaint against the unknown sender and any potential insider involved in leaking sensitive data. Following this, the N.M. Joshi Marg Police registered a case under BNS Sections 308(3) and 351(2), along with Sections 66(A) and 66 of the IT Act.

On Tuesday, G. Padmakar Tripathi, representing the company, filed the complaint at the N.M. Joshi Marg Police Station. The company had already conducted an internal probe and shared relevant information with the police. Investigators are now analyzing the email and working closely with cyber experts to trace the sender. Given that the accused has access to the company's confidential data, authorities are also examining the involvement of any insiders.

The cybercrime team is actively pursuing leads, and further developments in the case are expected soon.
