A proposal has been introduced to make the recitation of ‘Manache Shlok’, composed by Samarth Ramdas Swami, compulsory in schools run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. The motion, put forward by former mayor Kishori Pednekar, has sparked fresh debate in both educational and political circles. A detailed discussion on the proposal is scheduled during the corporation’s general body meeting on April 9, drawing widespread attention. Stakeholders across sectors are closely watching the developments, as the decision could significantly impact the curriculum and overall approach toward value-based education in municipal schools across Mumbai in the coming months.

Explaining the intent behind the proposal, Kishori Pednekar stated that students today face increasing mental pressure due to the fast-paced and competitive environment. She argued that ‘Manache Shlok’ are not merely religious verses but serve as an effective tool for mental and moral development. According to her, regular recitation can encourage self-reflection, promote positive thinking, and help students manage stress more effectively. The proposal emphasizes the potential benefits of incorporating traditional literature into modern education to build emotional resilience and ethical awareness among students navigating academic and personal challenges in an increasingly demanding world.

The proposal has, however, faced strong opposition from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM). Party group leader Vijay Ubale objected, stating that education in schools should be based on constitutional values rather than religious teachings. He argued that imposing such practices on students from diverse religious backgrounds would be inappropriate. Ubale emphasized the need for inclusive education that respects all communities and avoids compulsory religious elements. The objection has intensified the political debate, highlighting concerns around secularism and the role of religious content in publicly funded educational institutions.

If approved, the proposal will be forwarded to the administration for further action. Notably, it is not intended to remain limited to municipal schools alone. There are indications that efforts will be made to extend the rule to private schools where Marathi is a compulsory subject, by approaching the state government for implementation. This broader scope has added another dimension to the debate, as it could affect a larger number of students across different educational boards. The final decision will determine whether such cultural and literary practices become a mandated part of school routines.

Earlier, a similar proposal by former BJP corporator Samita Kamble to make yoga compulsory in schools had been rejected by the administration. This precedent has raised questions about how authorities will respond to the current proposal regarding ‘Manache Shlok’. All eyes are now on the April 9 meeting, where the ruling and opposition parties are expected to clash over the issue. The outcome will be crucial in shaping the administration’s stance on integrating traditional practices into formal education and balancing them with constitutional and secular principles.
