Accidents in Mumbai's local train have always been a concern for citizens and authorities. According to the data by Mumbai Live, 2,468 people died last year in comparison to 2,590 deaths in 2023. Out of this, 1,151 lost their lives from crossing tracks.
According to the report, the number of commuters injured in accidents remained low in 2024, while the number of deaths due to accidents increased. It can be considered that 6 to 7 people daily lost their lives in train accidents due to overcrowding, track crossings, and other accidents.
Over 50,000 fatalities have been reported in the past 20 years. The Western Railway (WR) and Central Railway (CR) ferry 75 lakh passengers daily.

According to the Mumbai Live report, 22,481 people lost their lives and 26,572 injured from 2005 till July 2024 in Western Railway. The Vasai and Borivali recorded the highest fatalities in the past two years. Currently, there are 1394 suburban services on the Western Railway.
There were 29,321 deaths reported on Central Railway (CR) between 2009 and June 2024. Kalyan and Thane reported the highest fatalities on CR. There are 1,810 suburban services on CR, which carry nearly 40 lakh commuters.
