Mumbai’s suburban rail network witnessed another shocking act of violence with the arrest of 27-year-old Omkar Shinde in connection with the murder of a college professor. Shinde was apprehended by the Government Railway Police at Malad railway station after allegedly fatally attacking Alok Singh, a professor at a reputed college in Vile Parle. The incident occurred on Saturday between platforms 1 and 2, sending shockwaves across the city’s local train commuters. Police said both the accused and the victim were travelling in the same local train when a dispute broke out over boarding and alighting near Malad station.

According to investigators, the argument between Shinde and Singh escalated as the overcrowded train approached Malad. What began as a routine quarrel over space near the train door soon turned violent. Police said that after both men got down on the platform, Shinde allegedly lost his temper and pulled out a sharp knife from his pocket. He is accused of stabbing Professor Singh multiple times in the abdomen before fleeing the spot. Singh collapsed in a pool of blood, while the accused managed to disappear into the station crowd, triggering an intensive police search operation.

The Borivali Government Railway Police launched an immediate investigation and relied heavily on the station’s surveillance system. CCTV footage captured a man wearing a white shirt and blue jeans escaping via a foot overbridge moments after the attack. Using this visual evidence and technical tracking, police traced Shinde’s movements up to Vasai, where he was arrested. A senior police officer said the motive appears to be a dispute over deboarding from the train, though investigators are probing whether any prior enmity existed. The victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
