Borivali railway station has marked a major milestone in Mumbai’s suburban rail network by commissioning the city’s largest Electronic Interlocking (EI) system. For daily commuters, the upgrade at Borivali railway station promises safer, faster, and more reliable journeys on one of Mumbai’s busiest suburban corridors. The commissioning of the city’s largest Electronic Interlocking (EI) system will help reduce delays, improve punctuality, and ensure smoother train movements during peak hours. By replacing the old relay-based signalling with the advanced Siemens Westrace MK-II system, train operations are now managed with greater precision, lowering the risk of signal failures and human error. With the ability to handle heavy traffic efficiently, the new system directly benefits lakhs of passengers who rely on Borivali for everyday travel.

Behind the scenes, Borivali has emerged as a technologically advanced rail hub capable of managing extremely dense suburban traffic. The station now operates Mumbai’s largest EI setup, controlling 381 operational routes and 90 track points across seven running lines. A modern, mission-control-style signalling room allows operators to monitor real-time train movements on dual 65-inch 8K screens, enabling quicker decisions during disruptions or emergencies. Western Railway officials have said the system significantly enhances operational reliability and safety by seamlessly managing hundreds of routes, signals, and track circuits with high accuracy. “The new system manages hundreds of routes, points and signals across multiple running lines, significantly improving operational reliability and safety,” said a Western Railway spokesperson, reported Mid Day.

The improvements extend beyond signalling with the commissioning of the Borivali–Kandivali sixth railway line, offering further relief to commuters. Opened after a successful safety inspection in January 2026, the 3.21-kilometre stretch is part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-II. The additional line will reduce congestion, improve punctuality of local and long-distance trains, and increase overall track capacity on the Western line. Together, these upgrades reflect a major step toward world-class rail infrastructure that directly improves the daily travel experience of Mumbai’s common man.
