Mumbai’s suburban railway network is currently experiencing a significant surge in passenger load, placing mounting pressure on major corridors such as Central Railway, Western Railway, and Harbour Line. The daily commuter count continues to rise, intensifying congestion across these routes. While air-conditioned local trains are receiving a positive response from passengers and authorities are considering increasing their numbers, persistent delays in AC services have emerged as a growing concern. Amid this situation, the central government has indicated plans to extend additional support to Mumbai’s suburban rail services to improve efficiency and commuter experience.

Providing details in the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that surveys are being conducted for new railway lines aimed at enhancing connectivity, especially in border regions. These initiatives are expected to boost modern transportation infrastructure and ensure safer, more comfortable, and efficient travel for passengers. To strengthen the Mumbai suburban rail network, 238 new trains equipped with automatic door-closing systems are currently under construction. Additionally, the government has sanctioned an extra financial assistance of approximately Rs 3,000 crore to ease the burden on suburban commuters and upgrade existing services.

Sharing an update on the high-speed rail initiative, the minister said that work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project is progressing rapidly. Over 300 kilometers of viaduct construction has already been completed, while work on piers, track laying, and station development is underway. The country’s first undersea railway tunnel is also advancing steadily as part of this ambitious project. The development includes 435 kilometers of foundational work, installation of girders across 338 kilometers, laying of tracks over 168 kilometers, and the setup of overhead electrical (OHE) systems, marking significant progress in India’s modern rail infrastructure.

Construction at several key stations such as Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, and Bandra Kurla Complex is nearing completion at a rapid pace. Additionally, multiple bridges over rivers have already been completed under the project. Work is progressing swiftly in regions including Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Nadiad, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati, highlighting the accelerated pace of development across various segments of the corridor.
