Significance of Shab-e-Barat

This year, Shab-e-Barat falls on Thursday, February 13, 2025. The date is determined by the sighting of the moon of the Sha'ban month, 1446. Shab-e-Barat is one of the most significant nights for Muslims. According to the Islamic calendar, it is observed in the middle of Sha'ban (the night between the 14th and 15th of Sha'ban).

Shab-e-Barat is also known as Nisf Sha'ban. The night of Shab-e-Barat will begin at sunset on February 13 (after Namaaz-e-Maghrib) and will end at dawn on February 14. Different countries have various ways of observing this occasion, and it is known by different names worldwide. In South Asia, especially in the Indian subcontinent, it is called Shab-e-Barat or Shabe Barat. In Arabic, it is known as Lailatul Barat, in Indonesia and Malaysia as Nisfu Sha’ban (Malam Nisfu Sha’ban), and in Turkey as Berat Kandili.

Shab-e-Barat is considered a night of forgiveness, during which many Muslims pray to Allah for His blessings and seek forgiveness for their sins ahead of Ramadan. Sha'ban is the 8th month of the Islamic calendar. The night is marked by the recitation of the Quran and Namaaz.
