A self-immolation attempt by a 38-year-old man was averted by alert authorities at Usha Mehta Chowk in south Mumbai on Tuesday. The man, identified as Dadaso Baban Kalsait from Takli village in Madha taluka of Solapur district, allegedly tried to set himself on fire by pouring kerosene over himself outside Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan. Police personnel and bystanders immediately intervened and restrained him before he could harm himself. Following the incident, he was taken to the Marine Drive Police Station for further questioning. Officials confirmed that prompt action by those present at the spot prevented a potentially tragic situation in the busy area.
According to police sources, Kalsait was reportedly upset after a statue of Vishwakarma installed on land belonging to the Lohar community was recently removed by the Nagar Panchayat, as it had allegedly been erected without official permission. Authorities stated that the removal had angered him, leading to the dramatic protest attempt. Police have registered a non-cognizable offence against him under Section 226 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further inquiry into the matter is underway.
