The much-awaited yellow line Mumbai metro 2B is all set to start its run after achieving significant milestone on Sunday with 5.4-km Chembur-Mankhurd stretch between Diamond Garden and Mandale is now energized, its overhead electrical wires active, four years behind schedule.  As per the reports the trial runs are slated to begin on April 16, coinciding with the 172nd anniversary of Mumbai's first train run and Indian Railways' foundation day. This marks a significant development following the Blue Line (Metro Line 1) that connects Versova to Ghatkopar. Unlike the recent metro lines that primarily cater to the western suburbs, Line 2B stands out as the only new corridor serving the eastern side.

Originally slated for full operation by December 2025, the line's progress was delayed due to the rebidding of the systems tender. However, thanks to the close monitoring and push from Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, early trial runs are now being initiated ahead of schedule. Five stations on the corridor—Diamond Garden, Shivaji Chowk, BSNL Metro, Mankhurd, and Mandale Metro—are reportedly nearing completion. Notably, the route intersects with the Mumbai Monorail at Chembur, significantly enhancing multimodal connectivity in the region. New Trains, Made in India.

The line will utilize six-coach, indigenously built BEML trains featuring energy-efficient regenerative braking, all-steel integral coaches, mobile charging points, IP-based public announcement systems, surveillance cameras, and bicycle storage.Initial trials will involve integration tests of rolling stock, signalling, and track traction, followed by loaded trials simulating passenger weight.

After successful trial completion, the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety will conduct a final inspection. Public operation will commence only after this clearance. Following the initial phase, the entire 18.2-km Yellow Line 2B, connecting Diamond Garden to DN Nagar with 14 stations, is projected to be operational by December 2026.
