In a swift and courageous response, the Mumbai Police averted a major tragedy by rescuing a woman and her three-year-old son from an attempted suicide late Sunday night in the JJ Marg police station jurisdiction.

According to police sources, the incident came to light during a routine night patrol when the ‘JJ Mobile 05’ van received an alert on the MDT (Mobile Data Terminal) tablet. The call reported a serious domestic dispute between a husband and wife, requiring immediate police intervention.

Acting promptly, Police Constable Kiran Pote rushed to the location. Upon arrival, it was found that amid a family dispute, the woman had locked herself inside the house along with her young son, while her husband and elder child were left outside.

Sensing the gravity of the situation, Constable Pote immediately informed his senior officer, Police Inspector Rahul Pawar. Following instructions, Pote broke open the door without delay. Inside, he encountered a disturbing scene: the woman had placed a stool on the bed and tied a noose using a dupatta to the ceiling fan, attempting to hang herself along with her child.

Displaying presence of mind and quick action, Constable Pote rescued both the mother and child, untied the noose, and brought them to safety. The police then provided water and comforted the distressed duo.

During questioning, the 30-year-old woman revealed that ongoing marital discord, allegedly due to her husband’s extramarital affair, had pushed her into severe mental stress, leading her to take the extreme step.

Following the rescue, Police Inspector Rahul Pawar, Woman Sub-Inspector Usha Chavan, and officer Babar conducted detailed counselling sessions with the woman. Both her maternal and in-laws’ families were called to the police station.

The woman declined to file any formal complaint against anyone. After counselling and ensuring her safety, she was sent home with her family.

The timely intervention by the Mumbai Police once again highlights their alertness and commitment to saving lives.
