The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for July 23 and 24, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall over central Maharashtra, Gujarat, Konkan, and Goa, as well as East Madhya Pradesh on July 23. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai reports that moderate to heavy rain is expected in the city and suburbs on Wednesday, prompting a yellow alert. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Thane due to the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall. In response, the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has advised residents to venture out only if absolutely necessary.

On Tuesday, the total stock in the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai exceeded the 50-percent mark for the first time. By 6:30 a.m., lake levels had risen to 53.12 percent, or 7.68 lakh million liters, marking a nearly six percent increase in the past 24 hours.

The region is expected to experience fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, over the next five days.

An orange alert has been issued for several areas:

  • Very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated locations in Odisha from July 23-26.
  • Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Gujarat State from July 25-27.
  • Coastal Karnataka on July 23.
  • West Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on July 23 and 24.
  • East Madhya Pradesh on July 24.
