An 84-year-old woman was fatally run over by a BEST bus in the Mazgaon area of South Mumbai on Friday morning. The victim, who had been a passenger on the same bus, died on the spot after coming under its wheels. The Byculla Police have arrested the bus driver in connection with the incident.

According to the Byculla Police, the deceased has been identified as Asma Ben Tayab Ali Antri, a resident of Love Lane, Mazgaon. On the day of the accident, she had visited a mosque and was returning home by a BEST bus.

As the bus reached the Love Lane bus stop, Antri disembarked and attempted to cross the road from the front of the vehicle. In the process, she came in contact with the front left wheel and was run over.

A police official stated that the bus driver did not immediately realize the woman had fallen under the vehicle. However, pedestrians quickly raised an alarm, prompting him to stop. She was rushed to Sir J.J. Hospital, but doctors declared her dead before admission.

Following the incident, the Byculla Police detained the driver, identified as 32-year-old Dadu Krushna Agivale. He was subsequently arrested and booked under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).

The police have launched a detailed investigation into the case.
