A disturbing case of impersonation fraud has surfaced in Bhandup, drawing attention to the increasing number of such scams in residential areas. Locals apprehended a man who allegedly pretended to be an employee of Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) and attempted to cheat a family. The suspect was caught after he tried to deceive residents by gaining their trust under false pretences. A video of the confrontation has circulated widely on social media, showing the tense exchange between the accused and the household members he allegedly targeted in an attempt to extract money.

The incident was uncovered when a resident identified the suspect as the same individual who had earlier visited his home and reportedly cheated his mother of a significant amount of money. According to the complainant, the man returned to the residence, likely intending to repeat the fraudulent act. However, this time, the family recognised him and confronted him immediately. The quick thinking and alertness of the residents played a crucial role in preventing another potential financial loss and ultimately led to the suspect being detained before he could execute his plan again.

A video capturing the confrontation has gained traction online, further exposing the suspect’s actions. In the footage, the man can be seen wearing a ‘Team MGL’ shirt and carrying what appeared to be fake identification documents to support his claim. When questioned by the residents, he was reportedly unable to present valid proof of employment or justify his presence in the housing society. His inconsistent responses raised suspicion, prompting locals to take action. The video has since sparked discussions about the growing threat of impersonation scams and the need for increased vigilance among citizens.

After being confronted, the accused was taken by residents to the Bhandup Police Station, where a formal complaint was registered. Authorities have detained him and launched an investigation to determine whether he is part of a larger organised network operating in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. The complainant also highlighted that such fraudsters often target vulnerable individuals, including women, elderly residents, and children who are alone at home. They typically use tactics such as fake gas bill updates or urgent payment demands to pressure victims into making quick payments through cash or digital methods.

Officials have noted a rise in similar fraudulent activities across the city in recent months. These scams involve not only individuals impersonating company staff but also cybercriminals distributing malicious applications disguised as official tools to access sensitive financial data. In response, authorities and MGL have issued advisories urging residents to remain cautious. Citizens are encouraged to verify the identity of any service personnel and avoid making payments at their doorstep. Instead, they should rely only on official platforms for transactions and promptly report any suspicious activity to local authorities or housing society management.
