A disturbing case of alleged harassment against senior citizens has emerged from Mumbai, involving two separate incidents in Bandra and Vikhroli. In Bandra, an elderly couple reportedly faced abuse from their own son and grandson after approaching the court to reclaim a flat they had earlier transferred through a gift deed. In a separate case in Vikhroli, a 76-year-old woman accused her daughter-in-law of throwing her out of the house following her son’s death. Police have registered cases in both jurisdictions and initiated investigations into the serious allegations of mental and physical harassment against the elderly victims.

In the Bandra case, complainant Nanda Agicha, aged 79, has been residing with her husband in a seven-storey building for the past 30 years. The entire family lived together in a duplex apartment until 2017, when the flat was transferred to their grandson through a gift deed. Initially, relations remained cordial, but from 2020 onwards, tensions escalated as their son, daughter-in-law, and grandson allegedly began mistreating them. In 2024, Agicha approached the senior citizens’ court seeking cancellation of the gift deed. The court granted interim relief in her favour, which reportedly intensified the harassment by her family members.

The elderly couple further alleged that they were subjected to deliberate mental distress through various actions. Due to non-payment of society maintenance charges, lift services in the building were suspended, leaving them stranded and unable to visit the hospital for several days. They also accused their family of installing CCTV cameras in the hall, disabling the doorbell, and drying clothes inside the house to create inconvenience and humiliation. Based on these allegations, Mumbai Police registered a case against the son, daughter-in-law, and grandson at the Bandra police station and launched a detailed probe.

Meanwhile, in the Vikhroli incident, a 76-year-old woman alleged that her daughter-in-law subjected her to severe abuse after her son’s demise. The elderly woman had been living with her two sons and their families, but following one son’s death, his wife reportedly began harassing her. The complaint includes accusations of physical assault, starvation, and continuous mental torture. To document the abuse, the woman’s younger son had installed CCTV cameras at home, but they were allegedly removed by the daughter-in-law. The situation worsened when the younger son travelled to Pune for work, during which time the complainant was reportedly forced out of her own home.
