Mumbai witnessed a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked the city, after the body of a one-day-old newborn girl was found abandoned in the Jarimari area on Wednesday. The incident has caused panic and outrage in the locality. Police suspect that an unknown person dumped the infant’s body at a deserted spot in an attempt to conceal the birth.

According to Sakinaka Police, the main control room received information at around 11.38 am on January 21, 2026, about an unconscious newborn girl lying near the Muslim Society at Seva Nagar, close to the airport boundary wall. Acting swiftly on senior officers’ instructions, on-duty police personnel along with the beat marshal team rushed to the spot and reached the location by around 11.58 am.

The police conducted a panchnama at the scene and immediately shifted the infant to Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead after examination. The body was later sent for post-mortem, and further legal formalities were completed.

Police officials said the deceased newborn had a fair complexion, was approximately one and a half feet tall, had a medium build and curly hair, and was found in a naked condition. Preliminary investigation suggests that the infant died shortly after birth. Police suspect that due to social stigma or other reasons, an unknown person may have abandoned the newborn after concealing the delivery.

A case has been registered against an unknown person at the Sakinaka Police Station. Investigators are scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and are also contacting nearby hospitals, clinics and nursing homes to trace any link related to the birth of the child. Further investigation in the matter is underway.
