A 65-year-old pedestrian was killed after a speeding car rammed into him in the Chandavarkar Road area of Matunga on Friday morning. The incident also caused significant damage to a banana handcart and three other vehicles. The police have registered a case against the Accused driver.

According to police sources, the accident occurred around 11:30 am on April 3, 2026, near Trilok Hotel on Chandavarkar Road. The deceased, identified as Sohrab Russi Kotwal (65), was standing near fruit vendor Hanumanchand Mishra’s cart to purchase bananas.

At the same time, the Accused, Ramakrishnan Suryanarayanan (58), a resident of Thane, was driving his Hyundai Venue at high speed. He first rammed into a taxi parked by the roadside. Without slowing down, he then hit Kotwal with great force.

The impact was so severe that Kotwal was crushed between the car, the handcart, and a steel pole, and was dragged for some distance. He sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Raheja Hospital, where he later succumbed during treatment.

The collision also triggered further damage as the car hit a parked two-wheeler (Hero Splendor), which in turn crashed into another car (Hyundai Exter). The taxi, two-wheeler, handcart, and the parked car suffered major damage in the incident.

Based on a complaint filed by Hanumanchand Mishra, Matunga Police have registered a case against the Accused driver under Sections 106(1) (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

Police Sub-Inspector Kiran Nannavare is conducting further investigation into the case.
