Number of suicide cases in Mumbai has been on the rise for quite sometime now. Few months ago a police arrested a  25-year-old man in connection with the suspected suicide of his 26-year-old girlfriend, who was found hanging in her rented room in Mahim Koliwada. Before taking the drastic step, the woman recorded a video blaming her boyfriend for her death. According to police sources, they received information about the suicide on the day of the incident. Upon reaching the spot, the house owner informed them that the woman was a tenant in her room. Around 4:15 PM, the victim’s friend, Owais Sheikh (25), arrived and claimed that she had hanged herself. The house owner and Owais Sheikh broke open the door and found the woman, identified as Aliya, hanging from an iron pipe on the ceiling with a red bedsheet. She was immediately brought down and rushed to Sion Hospital with the help of Mahim Police and one of her friends. However, doctors declared her dead at 6:30 PM.A post-mortem conducted at Sion Hospital revealed a V-shaped ligature mark measuring approximately 9 inches long and 1 inch wide on her neck. The victim’s friend informed the police that the accused, Owais Sheikh, had been physically and mentally harassing her and was refusing to marry her. It is believed that this led the woman to take the extreme step. Police  registered a case against Owais Abdul Rehman Sheikh under Sections 108 (abetment of suicide), 117(2), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
