Commuters in Mumbai will soon have a more affordable and efficient travel option as the state transport department is set to approve bike taxis in the coming days. State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik confirmed that the decision is in its final stages and will be implemented soon.

Speaking to the media at Vidhan Bhavan, Sarnaik stated that bike taxis are already operational in 22 states across India under the Mahayuti government. The initiative aims to reduce travel costs and create employment opportunities for youth. "I believe bike taxis will be approved this month itself. However, certain safety regulations must be addressed to ensure the security of passengers, especially women," said Sarnaik.

The bike taxi initiative is expected to generate 10,000 to 20,000 jobs across the state. To enhance passenger safety, the government will introduce strict guidelines, including:

GPS tracking systems for all bike taxis  Mandatory helmets for both the rider and passenger  Strict background checks for drivers

About Fare Structure

As per initial reports, the fare for bike taxis is expected to be Rs 3 per kilometer. Additionally, any company operating bike taxis must have a minimum of  50 bikes in its fleet.
