In anticipation of the Elphinstone Bridge's demolition and the construction of a new bridge as part of the Sewri-Worli Connector Project, Mumbai Police announced that vehicles will not be allowed on the bridge starting April 10 for the next two years. According to a police traffic notice, the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector Project, which will improve the efficiency of the transport system, and the demolition of the 100-year-old Elphinstone Bridge and the construction of a new Elphinstone Flyover have been announced by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Overall, 60% work on the Sewri-Worli Connector project has been completed.

According to the notification, traffic will be significantly impacted by the Elphinstone Bridge's temporary closure for the next two years. Careful traffic management will be necessary to redirect traffic to alternate routes in order to prevent additional congestion and disruptions. It stated that residents should submit any complaints they may have to the draft traffic management notification to addlep.traffic@mahapolice.gov by April 13.

To prevent danger, obstruction, and inconvenience to the public, the following traffic diversions and arrangements will be made by the authorities for the public:

  • To get to the location via Tilak Bridge, vehicles would turn right from Madke Buwa Chowk (Parel T Junction), travel Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road, and turn left from Khodadad Circle (Dadar TT Junction).
  • Vehicles would travel straight through Krishna Nagar Junction, Parel Workshop, Supari Bagh Junction, and Bharat Mata Junction after leaving Madke Buwa Chowk (Parel T.T. Junction) via Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road. To get to Lower Parel Bridge, turn right from Shingte Master Chowk, cross the Currey Road Railway Bridge, and then turn right onto Mahadev Palav Road.
  • From Khodadad Circle (Dadar TT Junction), vehicles will turn right. They will then proceed to Tilak Bridge via Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road.

  • From Comrade Krishna Desai Chowk (Bharat Mata Junction) to Shingte Master Chowk, Mahadev Palav Road (Currey Road Railway Bridge) will be open in one direction from 7:00 to 15:00 and in the opposite direction from 15:00 to 23:00. The road will be open in both directions from 23:00 to 7:00.

The demolition of this ancient ROB is a crucial task that needs to be finished before the city sees the monsoon season. The project will reach a significant milestone when the work starts on April 10 and pave the way for a contemporary double-decker structure. It is anticipated that this two-story building will enhance Mumbai's East-West link.

The Elevated Connector between Sewri and Worli is 4.5 kilometres long. It is a divided elevated corridor with four lanes (2+2). For the Mumbai portion of Atal Setu, this route will be used as a traffic dispersal route. Additionally, this will link Atal Setu to the Mumbai Coastal Road and the Bandra Worli Sea Link. For commuters going between Navi Mumbai and South & Central Mumbai, it will shorten travel times and offer a route free of signals.
