A vehicular traffic has been diverted in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in the early hours of Wednesday, April 15, after a major accident occurred at the Mumbai Metro under construction site.

The accident has created major traffic for vehicles travelling towards Kurla and towards the Western Express Highway. The incident occurred when a crane used to hoist the beam on the pillar of the metro bridge toppled, resulting in the entire beam falling, according to the news agency ANI.

The emergency team from Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) reached the spot after the incident. The authorities have secured the area and are using machinery to lift up the crane.

However, there were no fatalities reported in the accident, while some workers were injured, though officials have not given the exact numbers or the seriousness of the injuries.

The major incident occurred due to a technical failure during the lifting of the metro pillar, where the crane lost control, resulting in the collapse of the girder. An investigation will be launched once the traffic is clear.

MMRDA director Basavaraj MB said that the incident occurred at around 4.30 am on Wednesday. He said J. Kumar Infraprojects Limited is the contractor involved in the construction of Mumbai Metro Line-2B.

"As per our initial investigation, there was a gear failure in the lifting boom of one crane. After the failure, the load shifted to another crane, which caused it to tilt...The road will be reopened for traffic within 3-4 hours," said the MMRDA director.

Traffic Diversion

The accident created a vehicular jam near the ICICI Bank BEST Bus stop signal, as the traffic going towards Kurla was diverted towards Diamond Market Gate number 8 and a U-turn from Dhirubhai Ambani Square in BKC.

Vehicles travelling towards Western Express Highway (WEH) or Bharat Nagar from Kural can take a left turn from the Diamond Market signal to reach the destination.
