In a tragic road accident reported on Thursday afternoon, an 81-year-old woman lost her life after being run over by a speeding Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) mixer truck in Chembur. The incident took place on S.G. Barve Marg beneath the Monorail station. The accused driver has been taken into police custody.
The deceased has been identified as Dhanibai Lunaram Balotiya (81), a ragpicker and resident of Thakkar Bappa Colony in Chembur. According to the police, the accused driver, Narayan Vishwanath Paswan (32), was behind the wheel of a blue Tata RMC mixer truck bearing registration number MH 02 GH 2369 at the time of the accident.
A complaint in the matter was lodged by the victim’s daughter-in-law, Yashoda Balotiya. In her statement to the police, she said that the incident occurred around 12:00 pm when Dhanibai was working by the roadside. At that time, the mixer truck, which was heading towards Kurla Signal, allegedly hit her with great force.
Eyewitnesses stated that the impact was severe, causing grievous injuries from her waist down to her legs, leaving her unconscious on the spot. With the assistance of traffic police personnel and family members, she was immediately rushed to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar. However, doctors declared her dead after medical examination.
Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case against the accused driver for rash and negligent driving. The vehicle involved in the accident has been seized, and further investigation into the matter is underway.
