In a disturbing incident that has shaken the city, two students lost their lives after allegedly consuming drugs during a live music concert held at the Nesco Centre in Goregaon. The exact cause of death is currently under investigation. The case has triggered widespread concern over the increasing drug use among youngsters.
The incident occurred on April 11, when a large-scale music event witnessed the attendance of nearly 3,000 to 4,000 youths. During the concert, several attendees reportedly indulged in heavy drinking and consumption of narcotic substances. Soon after, a few participants complained of deteriorating health.
According to officials, two young women were admitted to the Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari, while a young man was taken to Lifeline Hospital in Goregaon West. The young man died during treatment at the hospital.
One of the women, who was initially discharged from the trauma care facility, was later shifted to a private hospital as her condition worsened. She succumbed on Monday afternoon, while the second woman remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment.
Preliminary findings indicate a possible drug overdose, though the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after medical and forensic reports are received. Blood samples of the deceased have been sent for examination.
The Vanrai Police have registered a case of culpable homicide and have arrested five individuals in connection with the incident, including persons associated with the event. Earlier, three arrests had been made.
The shocking episode has once again highlighted the growing threat of drug abuse among the youth, with increasing demands for stricter checks and regulation of large public events in the city.
