The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to open the flyover near Vikhroli railway station for traffic by the end of May 2025, as construction nears completion. All iron girders for the bridge have arrived at the project site.
Designed to ease congestion, the flyover will provide a direct connection between Vikhroli East and West, eliminating the need for motorists to take longer routes via Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar.
The bridge is being constructed in three phases, with the first phase now complete, including the installation of six girders. The remaining two phases are progressing, with a total of 12 more girders to be installed.
Spanning the Central Railway line near Vikhroli railway station, the bridge will be 12 meters wide and 615 meters long. BMC is responsible for constructing 565 meters, while the railways will build the remaining 50 meters. Each girder weighs approximately 25 metric tons and measures between 25 and 30 meters in length. A total of 18 girders will be installed—six in each phase. The bridge will rest on 19 pillars, with 12 on the eastern side and seven on the western side.
As of now, 85% of the construction is complete. The remaining 15% is expected to be finished by May 2025, after which the bridge will be opened for traffic. Once operational, it will significantly reduce travel time and fuel consumption for vehicles traveling from the Eastern Express Highway toward Powai. Additionally, it will benefit motorists within a 5-kilometer radius of Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, and Kanjurmarg railway stations.
Given the high traffic volume near schools and the railway station, BMC personnel are ensuring the work is carried out with utmost caution. On the eastern side of the bridge, 95% of the work has been completed, while construction on the western side is ongoing. The approach road on the western side is ready. As the bridge curves near a school, a "deck slab" will be installed at this section, presenting a significant engineering challenge.
