The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a planned 12-hour water supply shutdown in parts of Mumbai’s eastern suburbs on Monday, May 18, due to crucial infrastructure work connected to the city’s water distribution system.
According to civic authorities, water supply will remain suspended from 10 AM to 10 PM in several areas falling under the M East and M West wards, including Chembur East, Chembur West, Govandi and Mankhurd.
The temporary disruption is being carried out to facilitate commissioning work linked to the ongoing underground water tunnel project between Amar Mahal (Hedgewar Udyan) and the Turbhe low-level reservoir. The project forms part of the BMC’s larger plan to modernise Mumbai’s water infrastructure by replacing ageing overhead pipelines with underground tunnels aimed at reducing leakages and improving water pressure in the eastern suburbs.
Alongside the shutdown announcement, the civic body has also issued a precautionary public health advisory for residents in the affected areas. Citizens have been advised to boil and filter drinking water for seven days, from May 18 to May 25, as a preventive measure against possible contamination or turbidity that may occur following major pipeline integration and pressure adjustments.
The maintenance work comes at a time when Mumbai is already facing tighter water management measures. The BMC had recently imposed a 10 per cent water cut across the city due to declining water levels in the lakes supplying Mumbai and concerns over a potentially delayed monsoon season.
Residents in the affected localities have been urged to store adequate water before the scheduled shutdown and use available supplies judiciously during the disruption period.
