Mumbai Weather Update: IMD Issues Yellow Alert for March 9 and 10 as Severe Heatwave Conditions Grip Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Other Districts

The  Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a yellow alert predicting heat wave to severe heatwave conditions in isolated pockets for Mumbai, Palghar, Thane, Raigad and other districts of Maharashtra on Tuesday (March 9) and Wednesday (March 10). At the time of writing this report, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), which is the major corporate hub, reported 38 degrees Celsius at 1 pm on Monday.

The city witnessed a sunny day with clear sky and dry weather, as per the weather department bulletin on March 9. The Regional Met Centre (RMC) of IMD in Mumbai stated that the minimum temperature in the economic capital of India in the morning hours was 21.3 degrees Celsius, reported by Santacruz observatory, while Colaba observatory reported 24 degrees Celsius.

Heatwave in Other Parts of Maharashtra 

After Holi, temperatures have started rising across Konkan and western Maharashtra. On Sunday, March 8, heatwave conditions were felt in several areas. At Navi Mumbai International Airport, the temperature reached 40 degrees Celsius at 1:30 pm on Sunday, with humidity at 17 per cent due to the influence of north-easterly winds.

According to the IMD forecast for the next three days, Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Akola, Amravati and Wardha are likely to witness heatwave conditions, with hot and humid weather expected at isolated places.

The weather in Pune city will remain dry today, with the maximum temperature likely to reach 37 degrees Celsius. Temperatures have also increased in Nashik, where the mercury is expected to remain around 36 degrees Celsius.

The intensity of the heat is being felt more in Marathwada, including Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The maximum temperature in the region is expected to reach 38°C today. Authorities have appealed to citizens, especially those engaged in agricultural work, to stay in the shade during the afternoon hours.

Heatwave conditions have also intensified across the Vidarbha region, including Nagpur. The Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert, as temperatures are likely to cross 40 degrees Celsius in Chandrapur and Wardha districts. The temperature in Nagpur is expected to remain around 39 degrees Celsius today.
