Be ready to pay at least 500 to 1000 rupees the next time you are caught leaving a mess in a public place because the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to intensify its cleaning campaign by enforcing stricter penalties and a monthly user fee to cover the costs of solid trash collection, transportation, processing, and disposal. According to the civic body's updated draft sanitation and health regulations 2025, it has proposed increasing the fines for littering and urinating in public places from Rs 200 to Rs 500 and for neglecting to clean up after pets from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000. BMC plans to implement a garbage removal user fee in addition to a 2.5-fold increase in fines.
