Mumbai marked a major step towards next-generation transport as the Bhoomi Pujan for its first pod taxi project was conducted on April 7 at the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). The ceremony was led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, signalling the official rollout of the ambitious initiative. The project is being implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and is expected to introduce a modern, efficient, and sustainable mobility solution in one of Mumbai’s busiest commercial districts.
Futuristic Mobility ConceptPod taxis, also known as Personal Rapid Transit systems, are a cutting-edge form of urban transportation designed to offer convenience and efficiency. These small, driverless, electric pods operate on dedicated elevated tracks, ensuring they remain unaffected by road traffic. Each pod can carry four to eight passengers and provides on-demand, point-to-point service without fixed schedules or intermediate stops. With speeds reaching up to 40 km/h and high-frequency availability every 15 to 30 seconds, the system minimises waiting time while maintaining safety through advanced technologies like GPS tracking, sensors, and real-time monitoring systems.
Traffic Relief SolutionThe introduction of the pod taxi network in Mumbai’s BKC is expected to significantly ease congestion in the area. The planned 8.8-kilometre elevated corridor will connect Bandra and Kurla railway stations with key business zones, improving last-mile connectivity for thousands of daily commuters. By reducing dependence on road-based transport such as autos and taxis, the system will help decongest busy streets. Since the pods operate above ground level, they will bypass traffic bottlenecks, reduce travel time, and improve overall movement efficiency, particularly during peak hours in the densely crowded business district.
