Nagpur, Jan 2

The increasing population of Nagpur is putting pressure on the basic amenities of the city. Under these circumstances, there is a chance that contaminated water may lead to spread of water born diseases. To provide safe drinking water to the 25L plus population of the city, the NMC water department collects around 300 water samples daily from all the zones and are sent to state and central laboratories for inspection.

The Pench project supplies 640 to 650 MLD of water per day to the city of Nagpur with allocation of 150 liters of water per person. Water supply has to be done by tanker in areas where there is no water pipeline near city. A GPS system has been installed to control the tankers. Water demand is higher in summers. Keeping this in in mind, 63 water tanks have been constructed to supply water to all areas. 23 new water tanks will be built under Amrut Yojana. Five water purification centers have been set up to provide clean water to the citizens.

The bacteria and contaminants are inspected and in case of any complaint of contaminated water supply by the citizens, water samples are sent for inspection at the zonal level.
