Nagpur, Nov 1

In a heartwarming incident a city doctor saved the life of his patient twice. This time by donating his plasma to save her from the deadly coronavirus. A 47-year-old woman Archana Singh (name changed) from Bilaspur was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2018. Back then, she completed six chemotherapy cycles followed by an Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant in 2018, after which she got a new lease of life. This year she again came to the same doctor - Dr Amol Dongre with severe Covid-19 symptoms and the doctor was able to save her life once again.

Talking to Lokmat Times, Dr Dongre, Medical Oncologist, Haematologist and Bone Marrow Transplant Physician at Alexis Hospital said, “Archana Singh had come to me back in 2018, with mantle cell lymphoma blastoid, she had a good will power. Singh was discharged in October 2018 when she recovered completely after her bone marrow transplant. However, she was again admitted to the hospital now, following fever and difficulty in breathing. These were indeed the symptoms of coronavirus. Her condition started deteriorating and she was in need of plasma immediately.”

Dr Dongre said, “If one is a patient of bone marrow transplant, they must not only follow the precautionary measures of coronavirus but, even greater care must be taken to safeguard the health.

Having been recovered from Covid in August, Dr Dongre himself was eligible to donate plasma. The team of infectious disease specialists who were monitoring her condition, advised her to take two units of plasma in the view of her deteriorating condition. Following this, for a second time, Dr Dongre went the extra mile and donated his own plasma to her. Singh recovered in 20 days with no comorbidities.

My condition was very bad but the efforts of Dr Dongre kept my hopes high and attitude positive. He is the one, who has literally brought me back from death, twice.”
