Nagpur, March 21

The city police was on toes the entire day, due to the escalating tension in city after the ‘letter bomb’ incident of Home Minister Anil Deshmukh. The BJP demanded the resignation of home minister Deshmukh, while NCP demanded the dismissal of former Mumbai commissioner of police Param Bir Singh. The police arrested 17 workers of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and registered case against them. The BJP workers were aggressive after former Mumbai CP Param Bir Singh levelled extortion charges against Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and started gathering at Samvidhan Square from 10.30 am onwards.

The road between Samvidhan Square and GPO had turned into fortress and there was heavy police deployment to prevent any untoward incident.

The BJYM workers burnt the effigy of home minister Deshmukh at the GPO Square and were trying to enter the residence of Deshmukh and there was tension, when the police tried to prevent them from entering. There was heavy police deployment in front of his residence as well. The BJYM workers were arrested and have been booked under arson, protesting without permission and under the Epidemic Act and later they were released. BJP workers protesting under the leadership of former guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule at Samvidhan Square were also booked.

The NCP workers also protested at Samvidhan Square at 4.30 pm against former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh. They demanded immediate dismissal of Singh and inquiry into his wealth. Cases were also registered against the NCP workers. As all the incident were under Sitabuldi police station, the entire police team of Sitabuldi police station was in stress through out the day. Senior officials were also monitoring the situation closely.
