GMCH mucormycosis patients at risk as scam continues in vial allotment

Nagpur, May25

Around 107 patients are undergoing treatment for mucormycosis at GMCH and each person needs five to six injections of Liposomal Amphotericin B daily.

According to the situation, around 535 injections are required daily, but only 83 injections are received from the district collector’s office and that too alternate day, which has put the lives of the patients at risk.

It has been one and half months that mucormycosis has been discovered, but still there is no regular supply of medicines needed for the treatment. Now questions are being raised as to who is responsible for this situation?

A new crisis of mucormycosis has come up, just when the corona situation was coming under control. There is a huge shortage of medicines for the treatment. Liposomal Amphotericin B injections, which is important in the treatment of the disease, are not available in the market. However, the injection worth `7,500 is being sold in the black market for `15,000 to `20,000.

As a solution to this, the health department took over the procurement and distribution process from Saturday. The responsibility for this was given to the district surgeons.

In fact, there are clear guidelines for providing medicines on mucormycosis to private hospitals only after the requirements of the government hospital are met. But due to non-compliance, there is a complete chaos in the distribution of injections.

How to cure a patient without medicine?

A total of 107 patients, including 29 with coronavirus and 78 with non-covid, are undergoing treatment at GMCH as of Tuesday.

Of these, over 60 patients have undergone surgery. It is important to start treatment immediately in this disease. Liposomal Amphotericin B injections are to be given five to six times, after the surgery. According when the requirement is of 535 injections, only 84 were given on Saturday, when 90 were promised, and on Monday only 83 injections were given. As many patients remain without injections, doctors are concerned about their recovery

8 injections were given to a private hospital out of 13

A patient undergoing treatment for mucormycosis at a Government Dental College and Hospital said there were about nine patients with mucormycosis at the hospital. On Tuesday, 13 injections of Liposomal Amphotericin B were received, while 45 injections were required. Relatives of a patient in a private hospital showed a letter from the district collector’s office and took 8 injections.

This made it extremely difficult for the doctors, as to whom the remaining five injections should be given.
