Samarth said, total per day consumption of fuel by cars in India is 30 million litres and 60 million litres in two-wheeler.s So the total amount of fuel used by private motorized transport in India is around 90 million litres everyday.

In this scenario, cycling as a means of non motorized transport can play significantly great role for India to save fuel and also reduce our expenditure on crude oil imports.

Out of 1500 million population of India, if 500 million people do 10 km cycling everyday instead of using car or motorcycle and each one of them will be saving atleast 100 ml of petrol or diesel everyday. In this way, 500 million population which is only one third of India's population can save 5 million litres of fuel.bThat amounts to saving of 5 billion rupees everyday or 133 million USD everyday for India.

Dr Samarth said, Prime Minister's office, Sports Ministry and Transport Ministry can appeal to people to use bicycle at least twice a week instead of using their motorcycles or cars. Cycle is almost available in every household of our country. All we need to do is to use it twice a week instead of motorcycle or car. The solution is in our hand but the Government is not actively talking about it. To cycle 10 km one does not even requires some special fitness, any lay person can do it.
