Tension gripped the Kathe Galli area of Nashik late Tuesday night following a stone-pelting incident after the Municipal Corporation removed an unauthorized religious structure. The action was carried out as per a court order, but soon after, unrest broke out in the locality. In the violent episode, 15 police personnel, including officers and constables, sustained injuries, while five police vehicles were severely damaged.

According to civic officials, the unauthorized religious structure had been served a notice on April 1, following which legal proceedings were initiated. The structure was demolished on Tuesday evening in accordance with the court’s direction. However, soon after the demolition, a crowd began to gather in protest. Tensions escalated when a section of the crowd started hurling stones at the police and civic staff.

Caught off guard by the sudden aggression, police personnel at the site initially tried to control the crowd peacefully. However, as the situation intensified, additional police forces were called in. Police used mild force to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control. The injured police personnel were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.

The incident created panic among local residents, many of whom rushed indoors fearing further violence. Several vehicles, including those belonging to the police, were vandalized in the attack. Broken glass, damaged parts, and stones scattered on the road painted a grim picture of the aftermath.

In view of the tense situation, the Nashik Police have diverted traffic from Kathe Galli and surrounding areas. Heavy police deployment has been made to prevent any further incidents. Riot control units and senior officials are monitoring the situation closely.

Police officials have appealed to citizens to maintain peace and not to believe in rumors being spread on social media or by word of mouth. “Strict action will be taken against those who try to disturb harmony,” a senior officer stated.

The Municipal Corporation has also urged people to cooperate with law enforcement and respect the court’s decision. As of Wednesday morning, the situation remains calm but sensitive, with authorities maintaining high alert in the area. An investigation into the incident is underway.
