Nashik’s long-awaited Metro Neo project appears to have hit a roadblock, as the state government focuses on testing a compact metro system instead. While preparations are in full swing for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, Metro Neo, which was approved years ago, has now received a "red signal".

A review meeting on Monday (3rd) was held through video conference, led by State Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik. The meeting included Divisional Commissioner Dr. Praveen Gedam, Municipal Commissioner Manisha Khatri, Additional Commissioner Pradeep Chaudhary, Executive Engineer Ravindra Bagul, and railway officials. They discussed the status of Metro Neo and decided to explore an alternative compact metro project. The state government has now been instructed to submit a detailed project report (DPR) on this to the central government.

Metro Neo Project Stalled for Years

In 2019, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced a tire-based metro project for Nashik, considering the city's growing population and expansion. The central government had also approved the Metro Neo project, allocating ₹2,100 crore in the budget. However, the project has faced continuous delays.

Before the Maharashtra Assembly Elections, the state government had urged the central government to allow it to fund the project independently. Despite this request, work did not progress. The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) was expected to contribute ₹102 crore, but due to financial constraints, it could only offer land free of cost instead. Even after this adjustment, the project remained stagnant.

Officials stated that the project was stalled due to technical and feasibility concerns. It appears that Metro Neo may be scrapped, with priority shifting towards a compact metro system.

During the meeting, officials were instructed to immediately submit a fresh plan for the compact metro, ensuring a smooth public transport system for Nashik. The detailed project report is expected to be sent to the central government soon.

This new development raises questions about the future of Nashik’s metro dreams, as the Metro Neo project, once considered a game-changer for the city's public transport, now seems uncertain.
