11 Chairs set up to honour women scientists on Science Day

The government announced 11 Chairs in the name of eminent Indian women scientists to inspire, encourage, empower women and give due recognition to the young women researchers, on the occasion of the National Science Day on Friday.

New Delhi, Feb 29 The government announced 11 Chairs in the name of eminent Indian women scientists to inspire, encourage, empower women and give due recognition to the young women researchers, on the occasion of the National Science Day on Friday.

The Chairs have been instituted in various areas of research, including agriculture, biotechnology, immunology, phyto-medicine, biochemistry, medicine, social sciences, earth science & meteorology, engineering, mathematics, physics and fundamental research.

The women scientists in whose name these Chairs have been instituted are: Dr Archana Sharma from agriculture and allied research, Dr Janaki Ammal from biotechnology, Dr Darshan Ranganathan from immunology, Dr Ashima Chatterjee from organic chemistry and phyto-medicine, Dr Kadambini Ganguly from medicine, Dr Irawati Karve from anthropology, Dr Anna Mani from meteorology, Dr Rajeshwari Chatterjee from engineering, Dr Raman Parimala from mathematics, Bibha Chowdhuri from physics and Kamal Ranadive from biomedical research.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced several schemes for women empowerment on the occasion.
