Chennai, Feb 19 The anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) protest by Muslim outfits in Tamil Nadu demanding the state government to pass a resolution in the Assembly that it the law will not be implemented went off peacefully.
Contrary to the earlier announcement, the protestors here did not lay siege of the state Assembly which was in session.
Thousands of Muslims held protests in major cities in Tamil Nadu including the state capital Chennai against CAA, National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) on Wednesday.
In the state capital Chennai, a large number of Muslims men and women carrying tricolour gathered near Kalaivanar Arangam.
Some political parties too have lent their support to the protest.
As a result of the protest traffic flow was affected on the main road Anna Salai and others in Chennai.
The Muslim outfits are holding the protest after Madras High Court denied them permission for the same on Tuesday.
Security was been beefed up near the Assembly. The police had installed CCTV cameras and also used drones to monitor the situation.
Similarly, anti-CAA protests are held in other parts of the state like Coimbatore, Trichy, Cuddalore, Tiruvannamalai and others.
Meanwhile in the Assembly Chief Minister K.Palaniswami announced building of a Haj House here at an outlay of Rs.15 crore on the land allotted by Tamil Nadu Wakf Board so that those undertaking Haj can stay.
Palaniswami also announced doubling of pension to retired Ulemas to Rs.3,000 and a subsidy of ARs.25,000 or 50 per cent of vehicle cost, which ever is less, towards purchase of two wheelers for Ulemas working in the 2,814 wakf institutions registered with Tamil Nadu Wakf Board.
The protest was held a day after a combative Palaniswami said those who were born in the state would not be affected by the newly enacted law.
Speaking in the Assembly on Tuesday, Palaniswami said the opposition DMK should explain who in Tamil Nadu would get affected by the CAA.
Palaniswami said those who were born in Tamil Nadu will not be affected by the CAA.
