Assam Boat Accident: Six people, including children, have been reported missing after a boat capsized in the Brahmaputra River in western Assam’s Barpeta district on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

According to media reports, the boat was sailing from Rohampur to Borghul with 36 passengers on board when the accident occurred. The vessel reportedly lacked sufficient life jackets and went missing after the mishap. Survivors either swam ashore or were rescued by local fishermen.

Sushanta Biswa Sarma, senior superintendent of police of Barpeta, told ANI that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, and local police are engaged in search and rescue operations.

The incident comes months after a similar boat accident in October last year in the Bharatpur area, which also left several people missing.
