Guwahati, May 14 The Assam Police, in a major anti-narcotics operation, seized drugs valued at around Rs 21.36 crore and arrested five persons in Kamrup district, officials said on Thursday.

The operation was carried out jointly by the Kamrup Police and the Assam Special Task Force (STF) based on specific intelligence inputs, officials added.

According to the police, a bus coming from a neighbouring state was intercepted at Amingaon on the outskirts of Guwahati during the operation.

Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicle, security personnel recovered 2.5 kg of heroin and 8 kg of opium concealed inside the bus.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared details of the operation on social media platform X and lauded the efforts of the police teams involved in the crackdown.

"Major narcotics seizure in Assam. As much as Rs 21.36 crore of drugs busted in a joint effort by Kamrup Police and Assam STF. In an excellent intel-based anti-narcotics operation, a bus from a neighbouring state was intercepted in Amingaon leading to the recovery of 2.5 kg heroin and 8 kg opium. Five accused arrested," the Chief Minister said.

Police sources said the arrested individuals are being questioned to ascertain the source and destination of the narcotics consignment as well as possible links to interstate drug trafficking networks.

Officials suspect that the drugs were being transported through Assam as part of a larger smuggling route operating in the Northeast region.

The latest seizure comes amid the Assam government's intensified campaign against narcotics under the "Assam Against Drugs" initiative launched by the state administration.

Over the past few years, Assam Police and allied agencies have carried out multiple operations targeting drug peddlers and trafficking syndicates across the state.

Senior police officials said further investigation is underway and more arrests may follow as the probe progresses.
