Kolkata, March 4 West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu called up the father of Indranuj Roy, the first-year student of Jadavpur University currently admitted to a Kolkata-based hospital after allegedly being hit by the Minister’s vehicle within the university premises during the March 1 ruckus, and expressed grief over the incident.
Confirming the development, Indranuj’s father, Amit Roy, a teacher by profession, told media persons on Tuesday that the Minister himself called him up on Monday night and said he was pained over the incident.
“The Minister, besides expressing his grief over the incident, also enquired about the health conditions of Indranuj. The Minister also assured me that he will personally speak to Indranuj after he is released from the hospital. We are really happy over the gesture of the Minister," Amit Roy said.
He also said that the Minister had also informed him that not just him but his wife also was pained over the unfortunate incident. He also said that he had a discussion with the Minister on the legal action being initiated against the students of Jadavpur University over Saturday’s ruckus.
Incidentally, on Monday morning, information surfaced that Kolkata Police have registered FIRs against several students of Jadavpur University, including Indranuj. A petition had also been filed at Calcutta High Court’s single judge bench of Justice Trithankar Ghosh accusing the city police of conducting a biased, one-sided investigation in the matter.
The hearing on the matter is likely in the second half of Tuesday.
The ruckus broke out within the university campus on Saturday when the Minister's car was allegedly stopped after it entered the campus, and a scuffle followed. The students were demanding immediate elections for the university’s students’ council.
The agitating students alleged that while Basu decided to leave the campus in the face of the protests by students, his vehicle deliberately hit the two agitating students, following which they were severely injured and had to be hospitalised. Amid the protests, the Minister also received minor injuries and fell sick. He was taken to the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital and was released later.
