New Delhi, March 27 The effort to change the name of Delhi's Mustafabad Assembly constituency has gained momentum. Delhi Assembly Deputy Speaker and BJP MLA from Mustafabad seat, Mohan Singh Bisht, is set to present a private member resolution in the Assembly for this change.

Bisht's resolution is mentioned in the list of business for Friday (March 28). So, it will be presented on Friday in the House.

The resolution says, “This House resolves that the name of the Mustafabad Assembly Constituency may be changed to Shiv Vihar Assembly Constituency in view of the sentiments of constituency voters”.

During the Delhi Assembly elections, Mohan Singh Bisht had promised that if the people re-elected him as their MLA, he would work to change the name of Mustafabad. Now, after being re-elected, he is moving ahead with fulfilling his electoral promise.

Mohan Singh Bisht claims that he has worked for the development of the area above caste and religion.

He asserts that he served as the MLA of the region from 1998 to 2008 and is well-versed with the local issues. Regarding the name change, Bisht mentioned that 58 per cent of the people in the area belong to majority community. He believes that the feelings of the majority community should be respected first. This is why he wants to change the name of the area to Shiv Vihar.

Mustafabad Assembly constituency has a Muslim population of around 40-42 per cent.

This area was also affected by violence during the 2020 Delhi riots, and the name of Mustafabad became widely discussed at the time.

Mohan Singh Bisht's political journey has been quite interesting.

He was elected as the MLA from the Karawal Nagar seat in 1998 and served until 2015.

However, in the 2015 elections, he was defeated by AAP's Kapil Mishra. Later, in 2020, Bisht made a comeback by defeating Durgesh Pathak and re-entered the Assembly.
