Kolkata, April 16 A Border Security Force (BSF) personnel was killed in a fire at the camp of the force's 77th Battalion at Hingalganj in North 24 Parganas district on Thursday, officials said.

The deceased was identified as ASI Jyotiram Singh.

The ASI had entered the fuel storage room of the camp on Thursday morning when the fire broke out and spread so quickly that he could not escape and was badly burnt. Other BSF personnel and locals tried to rescue him, but could not.

According to the police, the initial investigation revealed that a fire suddenly broke out while a speedboat was being filled with fuel from the fuel storage room.

Officers from Hasnabad police station arrived at the spot after learning about the incident. The BSF personnel, police, and local residents tried to douse the fire, but its intensity was so high that they could not.

After this, the fire brigade reached the spot and brought the fire under control. The ASI was rescued and taken to Basirhat Sub-divisional Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.

"A fire incident occurred at the BSF camp. An ASI of BSF died. The name of the deceased jawan is Jyotiram Singh. The body has been sent for post-mortem. We are conducting an inquiry," Hingalganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sandeep Das told media persons.
