Patna, April 28 Triggering a major security scare ahead of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary’s visit, a recklessly driven car fleeing a police security check near Patna knocked down two people late on Monday night, with police recovering two pistols and 15 live cartridges from the abandoned vehicle, officials said on Tuesday.

The incident also sparked public outrage in the area, with angry locals attacking the vehicle in protest and demanding the immediate arrest of the accused, who managed to flee the spot after abandoning the car.

“We have recovered arms and ammunition from the vehicle. We are conducting raids at several locations to arrest the accused. They will be arrested soon,” Amit Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO) of Bihta police station, said.

During a search of the abandoned vehicle, the police recovered two pistols, 15 cartridges and three magazines.

The seized weapons have been sent for forensic examination. The police said the vehicle owner has been identified through the registration number, and raids are underway to arrest the accused.

The incident took place when a speeding car, allegedly trying to evade a police vehicle-checking drive, rammed into villagers standing by the roadside at Raghopur village, coming under the Bihta police station limits.

According to Amit Kumar, a police team was carrying out intensive vehicle checking in view of a visit by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary. During the checking drive, a white car allegedly sped up after spotting the police and attempted to flee.

“In the process of escaping, the driver lost control of the vehicle and ploughed into people standing nearby, injuring two individuals,” Kumar said. The injured were immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.

Bihta police suspect a possible link to an arms smuggling network and are probing the angle, besides other aspects. “An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Arms Act and for rash and negligent driving at Bihta police station,” Kumar said.

The incident triggered anger among local residents, who pelted stones at the vehicle, causing extensive damage.

Sensing the crowd turning hostile, the occupants abandoned the car and fled from the spot.

SHO Amit Kumar later reached the scene with a police team and brought the situation under control.

The incident has sparked panic and outrage in the locality, with residents demanding swift action and the immediate arrest of those involved.
