The Delhi government announced on Saturday that, starting April 1, fuel pumps in the national capital will not supply petrol to vehicles older than 15 years and diesel to those older than 10 years as part of efforts to combat air pollution.
To enforce this, fuel pumps will be equipped with devices to identify and restrict fuel supply to overage vehicles, according to Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, following a high-level meeting on anti-pollution strategies. This initiative aims to reduce vehicular emissions and address the ongoing air pollution crisis in the city.
While this initiative is largely supported by environmental activists and health experts, it has raised concerns about its enforceability and the economic impact on vehicle owners, particularly those reliant on older cars for their livelihoods. Overall, the Delhi government's initiative is a critical step in combating air pollution. The success of this regulation will rely on effective implementation, public awareness, and collaboration among all stakeholders. The ultimate goal is to create a cleaner, healthier environment for Delhi's residents.
