Petrol price remained unchanged on Tuesday, but diesel price was hiked by 25 paise per litre. In Delhi, petrol price on Tuesday stood at Rs 80.43 per litre and diesel at Rs 80.78 a litre. In Mumbai, the price of petrol is Rs 87.19 a litre and that of diesel Rs 79.05 per litre. In Kolkata, while petrol price remained unchanged at Rs 82.10 per litre, diesel was retailing 25 paise costlier at Rs 75.89 per litre. However, retail prices were raised on May 5 because the Delhi government had raised the value-added tax (VAT).

The government had first raised excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 3 per litre each on March 14 and then again on May 5 by a record Rs 10 per litre in case of petrol and Rs 13 on diesel. The two hikes gave the government Rs 2 lakh crore in additional tax revenues. Officials in oil marketing companies said that diesel prices are seeing more volatility in international market so the price changes in the fuel segment has been higher. Before Tuesday, Fuel prices have remained unchanged for the seven consecutive days since June 30 across the four metros.
