Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, prayer and reflection. The festival is observed with special prayers, charitable giving, family gatherings and community celebrations.
In India, Eid-ul-Fitr is being observed on Saturday, March 21. The crescent moon was expected to be sighted on the evening of March 19, which would have made March 20 the likely date for the festival. However, as the moon was not visible, Ramadan completed 30 days, pushing Eid celebrations to March 21.
Several countries in West Asia, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Lebanon, celebrated Eid on Friday.
